During
the Spring and Summer terms of 2005 Trinity School joined with other
local schools, who belong to the Taunton Learning Partnership, to work
on a History Project about Taunton Market. The project was to mark "Taunton
11,000" a celebration of the town first receiving a royal charter
to hold a market.
Pupils visited
the livestock market, the farmers' market and Taunton Museum. They walked
the 'market trail' and found former market sites. The youngest pupils
also visited a local supermarket to see progression from market to shop.
As not all the
younger pupils could visit the livestock market, and see an auction,
a parent who is an auctioneer held a 'pretend' auction in the playground
and the children bid for large toy animals.
A class of Y3/4's
worked with the artist, Kate Lynch, to produce work which is exhibited
at The Brewhouse Theatre.
A selection of
the pupils' work will be archived in Somerset Record Office and will
form an important historical snapshot of the livestock market in 2005,
before it moves to its new site.
